Repairing relationships

Before I got my overlocker (thanks mum!), I had heard that they could be grumpy and persnickety beasties. So when it misbehaved on me the last time I used it, and I couldn’t get it to behave, no matter how many needles I changed, or how many times I re-threaded it.

So it went into time out. For more than six months.

Fast forward to my birthday, Jane took me out for lunch, and I found some really awesome fabric for making pyjama pants for Squishy. Today, Mark took Inigo to his parents place for the whole day, so I’ve been able to get a few things done, bit pacing myself so I don’t puke, and I even got the overlocker out, faced my fears, and…

We’re friends again 🙂

(BTW, as cool as this fabric is, this is not the special stuff!)

Oh, and one more thing…

I’m pregnant. Squishy is going to be a big brother – not until late Jan 2011, so it’s early days, but I am feeling so utterly vile I have decided to out myself, just so that I can reasonably explain it when I either pass out or puke on random strangers.

Roll on another eight months of nausea and feeling like a whale, but this time with a toddler/pre-schooler in tow.

Two and a Half

IMG_0381.JPG

Inigo is two and a half. The adorable is exploding, he is loving, gentle, thoughtful, imaginative, playful, turbo charged, and just a tiny little bit feral. Sleep is still an alien concept, and hearing the word no is often more than his little heart can bear. And waiting? Waiting is UNBEARABLE (especially when waiting for a mango lassi).

He says please and thank you (usually in relation to food, it is still a huge motivator), he is starting to master a few more gross motor skills (Nanna bought him a pink scooter that gets a lot of love), and his fine motor skills and speech are very well developed.

His favourite part of playgroup is craft, where we do “sticking”, and sometimes colouring, drawing, stamping and painting. At home we have a “box of sticking”, and many hours have been spent on the creation of collage and mixed media pieces. He is starting to show an interest in my knitting, mainly to pull the needles out and roll around in the yarn, but it’s an interest at least.

He loves to sing, and has begun to compose his own performance pieces. “Dirty Banana, Dirty Banana, Dirty Banana, Dirty Banana. That was the Dirty Banana song”, is shouted proudly from the back seat.

He is an intrepid traveller, and takes in new experiences and cuisines with relish and equanimity. There are a few things he really doesn’t like, but will usually just warm to a new taste with repeat exposure and a lack of any alternative. Having a lazy mother who doesn’t pack vegemite sandwiches when we are going out to an Indian restaurant means that he has developed quite a taste for spicy, flavourful food, though his favourite thing ever is still a mango lassi. Ever since he was quite small, he has cried if we drive past his favourite Indian restaurant.

And recently, as you can see in the video, he has learned to jump. With both feet off the ground at the same time!

Warning – long video!

I love this room

Found on Ohdedoh.
One day, I will have to post a picture of my baby blanket – rich purple and orange paisley, with a black, white, red, purple and yellow seersucker on the reverse. I think that explains a lot. My grandmother made it for me, and it was so lovely to see Inigo snuggled under it when he was sick last week, the thought that this garish textile is nurturing another generation warms my heart.

I love having a blog

I may not post often, but today, when our hot water failed to be hot, I had cause to ring the people that installed it – and they wanted to know when it was installed (certain parts only have a 1 year warranty). Of course, my paperwork didn’t have a date on it, so during a search of my computer, I found a blog post that was written on the day it was installed. The 30th of May, 2009. Gold!

Plans

So, my mate Miriam is having another baby (she is mama to Inigo’s best friend Oscar, they were born 4 days apart), and I want to knit her something special. Both of us wanted girls first time around, and now Miriam is expecting a much wanted girl. Often second babies get a little neglected in the special handknit items tally, so I gave Miriam a choice of two patterns, both a little special.

I am in love with this yarn, gorgeous colours, amazing drape, and really, really lovely to knit with. So I found this pattern, which uses an unusual cabled construction, and I think is adorable.

The other choice I offered was a cute little cardi with a dachshund on it – and the pattern is raising funds for a little dog to have her leg fixed.

Miriam has chosen the puppy cardi, and three colours of Bendigo Classic 12 ply – 744 Ginger (for the dog), 747 Lipstick Rose (for the body), and 704 Blueberry for the trim.

Can’t wait to finish the never ending Mr Greenjeans, and cast on 🙂
