Normal

Inigo’s Iron levels came back today (from a test taken on the 15th of January), and it’s normal.

The paediatrician is concerned about his iron levels because I refuse to feed him any beef. No lamb! Not even chicken. And not a skerrick of fish!!!!!

Of course, the kid eats a bucket load of lentils, heaps of spinach, and has fruit five times a day. So he gets non-heam iron followed by vitamin c three times a day, he probably has higher iron levels than most omnivores, because I pay attention to his diet, and I work hard at making sure he is developing a taste for healthy food.

Score one for the vegetarian diet!

  1. And if you’ve ever seen Inigo eat, you’d know he’s developed a real taste for food. I’ve never seen a child put away so much – and it was all really healthy.

  2. you’ve met Blaise – nothing with a face for her first 5 years, and no formula (which was constantly suggested by the geepee) and only occasional forays into omnivoracity since – healthy (despite congenital spinal condition with definite historic familial connection) intelligent and fit. I just think it was mean of the paed to suggest a blood test!

  3. From my own experience, I reckon people who perform blood tests on vegetarians to prove some sort of point are usually very disappointed. They can go kiss my sweet vegetarian iron levels!

    1. I am sure there are lots of ppl who would like to kiss your sweet vegetarian iron levels 😉 You’re right though – most vegetarians are better educated about nutrition than the average carnivore.

  4. I’m not veggie but AM shocked that your paediatrician was so worried by vegetarianism in a kid – blimey, how would half the world cope if that was a problem!

Not sure I agree with you re most veggies, though, having met SO MANY who eat cheese and chips (chip-shop chips, not crisps) as pretty much their whole diet. Veggies who take it seriously – yeah man!
