Twenty Weeks

Yesterday marked twenty weeks, and five weeks without measurable amniotic fluid.

Although this baby and I still have a long road to travel before he or she is home safe, I feel that this is a significant milestone, and I am thrilled to be here.

Now, for the next part of the journey, the road to viability. Another three weeks before we tour the NICU and meet a neonatologist, five weeks before I go to hospital as an inpatient, and six weeks for viability. Although many babies survive earlier gestations, things are harder for twins, which is why I have been told the minimum is 26 weeks.

We are still thinking about names. Both babies will need a name, no matter how this goes.

And tomorrow, mum and dad return from Thailand, so Bev and Ted can have a bit of a rest for a while!

  1. Still thinking of you and checking in often. Is that strange for someone who doesnt know you? Your journey could have been my journey. I am hoping with all that I have that you will be holding a healthy baby in your arms at the end of this.

  2. It is so hard to know what to write; I want to send a message that is encouraging and hopeful but not miserable and bleak… What an enormous event; and theres still so far to go.

Im really praying for you to have peace. I am so sorry you have lost one of your darling babies. If I could do anything that would help, I would do it in a heartbeat.

  3. So. If I focus on the positive: we were told 24 weeks was the major point of viability, even with twins. And that some come sooner and are fine – albeit in hospital for months and months. My question is, if your little nugget rears their head at 24 or 25 weeks, what happens? I’d want that clarified, because after all the hard work you have both done to keep this baby in place, it would be a shame if doctors refused to try to help him/her to stay alive simply because he/she came a few days early.

I think of you often, all three of you.
