Great, now the rest of the world thinks we’re all bigots…

This from the BBC website.

I heard the comment on the radio this evening on my way to picking Mark up from the train station. Apparently, our mighty leader doesn’t want HIV positive migrants. Funny thing is, the furore was cause by 70 HIV positive people moving to Victoria last year. 50 of them were diagnosed in Australia due to increasingly vigilant testing procedures, and the other 20 were born in Australia and diagnosed overseas.

Hardly an invasion.

And apparently, HIV infection is a reason why we deny asylum currently – as are disabilities. The most needy are turned away (UNHCR won’t even process the paperwork for Australia because they know a child with a limb that has been blown off by a land mine won’t get in), and yet the media stir up a frenzy to make the xenophobes spew more vileness.

On a lighter note, Sally rang this afternoon, and since misery loves company, I went round for a cuppa. Glad I did – left feeling much better, though still in danger of being very poor company. Thanks Sally.

  1. I thought you came over to cheer ME up! Thank you for coming over.

Re JH, I think he’s trying to whip up hysteria and create another Tampa. The Labour party will flood the country with people with infectious diseases who’ll be a drain on the medical system, and the Greens will make us all drug addicts etc etc ad infinitum. Not sure whether sad, or just plain sick.

  2. This from a government that has either deported or imprisoned its own citizens as they are mentally ill or suffering from severe physical injury… Are we really surprised? I read this week that Cornelia Rau is still arguing with the govt over who is liable for her illegal detention. Such compassion, such concern, such a load of shyte! BUT (he says in a voice dripping sarcasm) we are so limited in resources and space here in the merry old land of Oz, we must be careful to only let in the really deserving people… like rich white middle class Europeans.

  3. i am a complete cynic when it comes to this government. we all know they are heartless but when these announcements are made i always worry that they are a media smokescreen to take attention away from some even more vile legislation that will be passed in the wee small hours . i am very good at conspiracy theories too!i am about to try wading through the minefield of unhcr to sponsor a family from zimbabwe – poor black people unlucky enough to be born in such a place.so long as there are still people like you who care all is not lost.
