  1. Wow – sexist objectification, a particularly nasty flavour of deliberate ableism, and a “tranny” joke, all shoehorned into two paragraphs? I suppose it’s impressive, on some level.

  2. Not sure what you mean by ableism in this context – are you suggesting that this woman is stupid, but should be protected even though she is running for the second highest political office in the most powerful nation in the world?

I do think that everyone should be treated equally – but in politics, the smart is a pre-requisite.

The tranny thing doesn’t offend me, and as for sexual objectification, let she who is without sin cast the first stone. Maybe you are without sin, but I certainly am not.

I didn’t read it as sexist objectification, but I could be wrong.

Lauredhel, I want to agree with you, I want to be outraged that some asshole sexist bastard is having a go at a sister, but I just can’t.

Sarah Palin is not qualified for the job she is asking for.

  3. Not at all, I’m talking about this. “This time, if you watched that interview and weren’t scared out of your freakin’ mind, then you’re mentally ill, mentally disabled, or mentally disturbed.”

Many transgender people find “tranny”, used as in insult, absolutely violently offensive. (A cisgender person not finding it offensive is meaningless.)

I know Sarah Palin is completely unqualified and unsuited to the job, and I the thought that she could be in it gives me the screaming heebie-jeebies.

  4. You’re quite right – I didn’t consider that equating support of Sarah Palin to mental disturbance is ableism. I stand corrected.

I can also see that transgendered people might be offended by tranny, I had only thought of the transvestite meaning of tranny, and though it could still be considered offensive, it’s descriptive, and makes me think of Tim Curry in Rocky Horror. I thought he was pretty sexy 😉 I know that’s sexual objectification, but I do think there is a time and a place for that.

To be completely fair though, relating my gender status to my ability to process language isn’t very fair either.

  5. My remark about sexual objectification was about the lazy and meaningless headline “Sarah Palin Naked”, which bore no relation to the article.

“To be completely fair though, relating my gender status to my ability to process language isn’t very fair either.”

I’m not quite sure what this relates to?
